She and her two cousins, Ronnie and Estelle, formed The Ronettes. Three girls from Washington Heights who got so big that the Rolling Stones opened for them on their 1964 UK tour. So respected that the Beatles — the Beatles — asked them to be the only girl group on their 1966 American tour. But here’s what people rarely talk about. When Keith Richards inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, he didn’t praise the production or the fame. He said they could sing right through Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound without needing any of it. Estelle left us in 2009. Ronnie in 2022. And on April 26th, Nedra passed at home in Virginia, age 80, with her family beside her. The Ronettes are now a memory. Then, in September 1973, he died suddenly in a motel room near Joshua Tree, only 26 years old. Their second album together, Grievous Angel, wouldn’t reach the world until months after he was gone. She was left with unfinished plans and songs no one would hear him sing. Nearly two years later, she and Bill Danoff wrote “Boulder to Birmingham” — the only song she had a hand in writing for her breakthrough album, Pieces of the Sky. She didn’t write it to explain Gram Parsons to anyone. She wrote someone still trying to understand why he was gone, someone who would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham just to see his face again. The album launched her solo career. But she never treated Gram as merely the man who discovered her. For the rest of her life, she carried his music with her.

IN 1978, JOHNNY CASH FINALLY SANG “TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS” — THE HIT THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HIS ALL ALONG. When Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert first pieced the song together on a Maryland back road, they were imagining Cash’s booming voice, not John Denver’s. They thought it was too country for the young folk singer opening their shows. But after one of Denver’s December 1970 gigs at a little Washington, D.C. club, they played him what they had, and he wouldn’t let it go. The three stayed up until morning finishing the words. The song meant for Cash became Denver’s signature and one of the most beloved records in American music. Cash never got to make it his own. Yet years later, on Denver’s own television special, the two men sat down together with their guitars and traded that famous chorus back and forth, one voice deep and weathered, the other bright and clear, meeting inside the same song. It felt less like a contest over a song than two friends finally sharing one. And Denver, the host, seemed to be welcoming Cash into a home the song had promised him all along.

Colorado named “Rocky Mountain High” an official state anthem. West Virginia claimed “Take Me Home, Country Roads” as its own. On October 17, 1997, hundreds gathered in Aurora to say goodbye. His friend Tom Crum, co-founder of Denver’s Windstar Foundation, stood to speak. He said just eight words that people would carry for decades: “I hate that John died. But I am so glad that he lived.” The next day, thousands of fans filled a second celebration in Aspen — the mountain town he had made his home. His own lyrics were printed on the program: “Love is why I came here in the first place.” His ashes were scattered across the Rocky Mountains he had spent his life singing about. In Aspen, the city built the John Denver Sanctuary — boulders carved with his lyrics beside the Roaring Fork River. Every October 12, fans still gather there. He spent his life telling the world where home was. Then he went home for good.

THE THREE WORDS THAT CARRIED JESSI COLTER THROUGH 32 YEARS WITH WAYLON JENNINGS CAME FROM A PHOTO OF A STRANGER’S RUINED HOUSE. Sometime in the mid-1970s, Jessi Colter picked up a magazine in a doctor’s office. Inside was a photo of a home flattened by a tornado, and beneath it, three words from the person who had lost it: “Storms never last.” Jessi turned them into a song for her husband and closed her 1975 album with it. She would need those words more than she knew. By the early 1980s, Waylon was, by his own account, spending as much as $1,500 a day on cocaine, a habit that left him bankrupt and $2.5 million in debt. He recorded her song in 1980, and a year later, on Leather and Lace, they finally sang it together. In 1984 he quit cold turkey. A triple bypass came in 1988, and diabetes slowly took his strength, his mobility, and his left foot. When Waylon died in 2002, Jessi had stayed more than 32 years. A stranger lost a house to a tornado and refused to despair — and that stranger’s three words became the truth Jessi and Waylon kept choosing: storms never last.
