Cold, foggy, wind blowing dust across the baseball field. 25,000 fans paid between $3.89 and $7 for a ticket. The stadium held 42,500. Whole sections sat empty. Jim Marshall was the only photographer given full access to the Beatles that day. He followed them from the airport, into the locker room, onto the field. Backstage, they looked drained — drinking tea, smoking cigarettes, doodling on tablecloths like they were just trying to get through it. But here’s the thing nobody talks about: not a single person in that crowd knew they were watching the Beatles’ last concert tour. Ever. Now a new book brings together over 150 of Marshall’s photos — half of them never published. The proof sheets. The quiet backstage moments. The walk across the infield dirt. More people are watching than ever if you count online views with TV ratings. But here’s what kept nagging him — in 2023, CBS offered Colbert a five-year contract. He took three. Then two years later, they said the show was losing $40 million a year and pulled the plug. “Am I to believe that over the course of those two years, they suddenly started losing $40 million a year?” CBS canceled The Late Show in July 2025 — right as the Paramount-Skydance merger needed approval, right after years of Colbert going after Trump on air. Kimmel knows his own show is still profitable. Marty Robbins did not have to chase a record executive through Nashville for his first big break. One walked onto his little television show in Phoenix and heard enough to change his life. By 1951, Robbins was singing on local radio and hosting his own TV program in Arizona. He was still far from the Grand Ole Opry and years away from songs like “El Paso.” Then Little Jimmy Dickens appeared as a guest on the show. Dickens was already an established Columbia recording artist and Opry star. After hearing Robbins sing, he was impressed enough to tell Columbia that the young Arizona singer deserved a contract. The company listened. Robbins signed with Columbia Records that same year. In 1953, he joined the Grand Ole Opry and moved to Nashville. Over the years that followed, he became one of country music’s most versatile stars, recording everything from western ballads to country-pop and rockabilly. But the door opened in a much smaller room. Before the Grammys, the Opry and “El Paso,” Marty Robbins was simply a local television singer — until Little Jimmy Dickens heard one performance and decided Nashville needed to hear him too.

Before Shirley Collie became Willie Nelson’s second wife, she was already beside him on one of his first Top 10 records. Years later, a hospital bill would help bring their marriage to an end. Willie and Shirley recorded “Willingly” together in 1962, and the duet reached the country Top 10. They married in 1963, while Willie was still struggling to turn his songwriting reputation into success as a singer. But in 1969, a hospital bill arrived at their home. It showed that a baby girl had been born to a woman listed as “Mrs. Connie Nelson.” Shirley had not known Willie was having an affair with Connie Koepke. She confronted him. Willie later admitted there was no explanation that could make the situation look innocent. He and Shirley divorced in 1971, and he married Connie that same year. Decades later, Willie did not try to rewrite what happened. He said he regretted the pain he had caused Shirley and his other wives, admitting that when it came to love, he had always had a gift for making things complicated. The marriage ended badly. But before it did, Shirley had already become part of Willie Nelson’s story — not only as his wife, but as one of the first voices the world heard singing beside him.

Fifteen years after John Denver and Annie Martell’s marriage ended, Annie revealed something unexpected after his death: her favorite John Denver love song was not “Annie’s Song.” John and Annie married in 1967, when they were both young. Years later, after a difficult period in their marriage, John went skiing in Aspen. While riding a chairlift, the words to “Annie’s Song” came to him. He returned home and wrote down one of the most famous love songs of the 1970s. Annie later said she still cried when she heard it. But their marriage did not survive. They separated in 1982 and eventually divorced. During that painful period, John wrote another song for Annie: “Perhaps Love.” John died in a plane crash on October 12, 1997. He was 53. The very next day, Annie was interviewed about him. She said her favorite song of his was “Perhaps Love.” Not the song John wrote when their love was strong. The one he wrote while they were losing each other.

Kris Kristofferson bought a ticket to Nashville in November 1970. He never used all of it. He met Rita Coolidge at the gate in Los Angeles. They were on the same flight and talked the whole way, and when the plane stopped in Memphis, he got off with her. Before that night ended they had already picked a name for a child they hadn’t had yet. She called it love at first flight. They married in 1973. Their daughter Casey was born the next year. They won two Grammys singing together. Then it came apart. They divorced in 1980, and when Rita finally wrote about it, she softened nothing — the drinking, the betrayal, crying every single day. She said it was not a good way to live. She asked for nothing when she left. But around that same time, asked about Kris, she wasn’t bitter at all. She said the two of them still had a bond nobody else could follow. Asked whether they might ever sing together again, she smiled and said, “Never say never.” They never got the chance. Kris died on September 28, 2024, at his home in Maui. He was 88. By then they had been divorced forty-four years.
