She sounded tired, irritated, and completely done with a love that kept going wrong. But here is the part many people never hear. Patsy’s single arrived in January 1958 and failed to chart. Johnnie & Jack soon took the same song to No. 7. Then Waylon Jennings recorded it in 1965 and reached No. 16, earning his first Top 40 country hit. Patsy never got the hit from it. Still, when her voice reaches that chorus, the chart numbers feel almost beside the point.
