WAYLON JENNINGS SANG “ONLY DADDY THAT’LL WALK THE LINE.” CONNIE SMITH HEARD IT — AND GAVE THE WOMAN HER SIDE OF THE STORY. In 1968, Waylon Jennings released “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line,” and the song climbed to No. 2 on the country chart. One of the things that caught Connie Smith’s ear was Wayne Moss’s guitar playing on Waylon’s recording. That same year, Connie recorded the song from a woman’s point of view as “Only Mama That’ll Walk the Line” for her album Sunshine and Rain. She even brought Wayne Moss in because she wanted that guitar feel from Waylon’s version. Connie later remembered that she recorded the song in a different key, which made Moss’s job harder — but he still pulled it off. Waylon gave the song its swagger. Connie kept that spirit, changed the perspective, and made it sound like the woman finally got to answer back.

BEFORE THE HIGHWAYMEN, JOHNNY CASH AND WAYLON JENNINGS STOOD TOGETHER AND SANG FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF A MAN BEHIND BARS. In 1978, Cash and Jennings released “There Ain’t No Good Chain Gang,” written by Hal Bynum and Dave Kirby. The song appeared on Cash’s album I Would Like to See You Again and became one of their earliest major recorded collaborations. The story is simple. A prisoner writes home to his mother and tells her what life behind bars has taught him. Cash takes the lead, while Waylon’s rougher voice joins him on the chorus. There is humor in the warnings, but underneath it is a man realizing that some lessons come too late. Released as a single in May 1978, it climbed to No. 2 on Billboard’s country chart. Years before Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson joined them in the Highwaymen, Cash and Waylon already sounded like two men who understood exactly how an outlaw song should feel.

WAYLON JENNINGS ASKED HANK WILLIAMS JR. ABOUT HIS FATHER. HANK JR. HAD BEEN ONLY THREE YEARS OLD WHEN HANK WILLIAMS DIED. “The Conversation” wasn’t written like an ordinary duet. Waylon Jennings asks the questions, and Hank Williams Jr. answers them — about his father, his mother Audrey, the Driftin’ Cowboys, and the complicated man behind the legend. Hank Sr. died in 1953, before his son was four, leaving Hank Jr. to grow up surrounded by his father’s music and reputation. Hank Jr., Waylon and drummer Richie Albright wrote the song together. WAYLON SANG MOST OF “LUCKENBACH, TEXAS” ALONE. THEN, NEAR THE END, WILLIE NELSON’S VOICE WALKED IN. In 1977, Waylon Jennings recorded “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love),” written by Chips Moman and Bobby Emmons, for his album Ol’ Waylon. Willie Nelson didn’t share the whole song with him. He appeared only for the final refrain — but that short entrance became one of the record’s most memorable moments. The funny part was that Waylon later admitted he never really liked the song. At the time it was recorded, he hadn’t even been to Luckenbach. Still, listeners loved what it represented: leaving money, status and complications behind and getting “back to the basics of love.” The song reached No. 1 and stayed there for six weeks. THE BULLETS WERE COMING THROUGH THE JEEP. THE SOLDIER DRIVING LEE GREENWOOD LOST A FINGER. GREENWOOD STILL HAD A LETTER TO DELIVER TO 200 MARINES. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush asked Lee Greenwood to travel to Panama and perform for American troops. He also gave the country singer another job: carry a personal letter from the president to roughly 200 Marines stationed deep in the area. Greenwood later recalled that he traveled by jeep with an Army sergeant when they suddenly came under gunfire. Bullets struck around them. Greenwood wasn’t hit, but the sergeant driving him lost his index finger. They kept going. Greenwood reached the Marines and delivered the president’s letter. Years later, he said the wounded sergeant came to one of his concerts and introduced himself again. Greenwood had sung “God Bless the U.S.A.” thousands of times. But in Panama, supporting the troops wasn’t just something he sang about. It was something he had driven into gunfire to do.

Willie Nelson has been married four times. Only one of those marriages is still standing, and it started with an argument about his hair. In 1986, Annie D’Angelo was hired as a makeup artist on Stagecoach, a TV movie Willie was filming. The production wanted him to cut his braids for the role. Annie took his side. She said he should not have to. She was in no hurry after that. Willie was still married to his third wife. In his memoir he wrote that Annie had to be certain the marriage was over and that he was truly free. His divorce came through in 1988. Then, in November 1990, federal agents arrived at his door. The IRS said he owed $16.7 million and took his houses, his land, his recording studio, his gold records and his instruments. He was 57, and almost everything he owned was gone. Ten months later, on September 16, 1991, Annie married him in Nashville. Thirty-five years on, he is 93 and still out on the road. She is still his wife.

A 29-YEAR-OLD PHOTO. ONE PAGE IN BILLBOARD. $20,000. JOHNNY CASH NEVER SAID A WORD. On February 25, 1998, Johnny Cash won the Grammy for Best Country Album for Unchained, beating Alan Jackson, George Strait, Dwight Yoakam and Patty Loveless. He turned 66 the next day. Country radio had barely played the record. His producer Rick Rubin came from rock and hip-hop. He paid $20,000 for a full page in Billboard, dated March 14, 1998: one black-and-white photo of Cash with his middle finger raised, and a short line thanking the Nashville music establishment and country radio for their support. The photo was 29 years old, and Nashville had nothing to do with it. On February 24, 1969, Cash was at San Quentin State Prison in California, about to record a live album in front of the inmates. Photographer Jim Marshall asked him for a shot for the warden. Cash raised his finger and said nothing. Marshall later called it probably the most stolen photograph in the world. For 29 years it sat almost unseen.

WAYLON JENNINGS NEVER GAVE THE PRESS A STATEMENT ABOUT HIS ARREST. HE GAVE THEM AN ALBUM INSTEAD. The bust came on August 23, 1977, at American Sound Studios in Nashville, where he was cutting harmony vocals for a Hank Williams Jr. record he was co-producing. Federal agents had traced a package of cocaine mailed to the studio from his manager’s New York office. He was booked on conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute, and six weeks later the case fell apart at a preliminary hearing — not over the drugs his crew got rid of while the agents were stalled, but over a defective warrant that named him as owner of a studio he only rented. The prosecutor’s verdict was that Jennings used drugs but wasn’t a criminal. He was, by his own telling, spending fifteen hundred dollars a day on cocaine at the time, and he wouldn’t quit until 1984. The following spring he went in and recorded the whole mess. “I’ve Always Been Crazy,” his own song, no apology anywhere in it, spent three weeks at number one. The second single was about the arrest itself. Rolling Stone later called the album the first country record ever to ship gold, and it sat at number one for the final eight weeks of 1978.

Johnny Cash grew up poor in Dyess, Arkansas, in a family where faith and music were part of everyday life. His mother, Carrie, sang old gospel songs, and those hymns stayed with him long after he left home. Decades later, during his final years of recording, Cash returned to the music he had known as a child. He recorded fifteen hymns for My Mother’s Hymn Book — songs including “Where We’ll Never Grow Old,” “I Shall Not Be Moved,” “I’ll Fly Away” and “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder.” Cash died in September 2003. The collection was later released as a standalone album on April 6, 2004. By then, the voice his mother first encouraged had traveled around the world. But near the end, Johnny Cash returned to where that voice had begun — the songs he learned at home from Mama.

Ray Price helped create one of country music’s most copied sounds — then some of the same fans who loved him turned away when he refused to keep making it. In the 1950s, songs like “Crazy Arms” helped establish the driving 4/4 shuffle that became known as the “Ray Price Beat.” Fiddles, steel guitar and hard-country rhythm had made him a star. But Ray did not want to spend the rest of his life repeating himself. By 1967, he recorded “Danny Boy” with a full orchestra. Strings replaced much of the honky-tonk sound people expected from him. Many longtime fans hated the change. Some believed Ray was abandoning the music that had made him famous. He kept going anyway. Three years later, Ray recorded Kris Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times” with the smoother style he had fought to pursue. It reached No. 1 on the country chart, crossed over to No. 11 on the pop chart, and earned Ray a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male. The sound that once made some of his old fans walk away had become part of one of the biggest records of his life. Ray Price had already changed country music once. He simply refused to ask permission before changing himself again.

Ray Price was dying of pancreatic cancer when he recorded the album he wanted his wife to listen to after he was gone. Ray and Janie Price had been married since 1970. Janie later said Ray was never a “mushy” man. He loved her, but he was not the kind of husband who constantly said it. By 2013, cancer and chemotherapy were wearing him down. Still, Ray traveled to Nashville to work with producer Fred Foster on one final collection of love songs. Janie usually went everywhere with him, especially during his illness. This time, Ray asked to make the sessions without her. She eventually learned why. The album, Beauty Is… The Final Sessions, was for her. Among its songs was Willie Nelson’s “It Always Will Be,” surrounded by songs about lasting love, memory and two people growing old together. Ray told Janie, “I want you to have it to listen to when I’m not here.” He finished his studio work in October 2013. Ray Price died on December 16. He was 87. The album came out four months later. For a man who had never been comfortable saying “I love you,” his final record said it twelve different ways.

Marty Robbins did not have to chase a record executive through Nashville for his first big break. One walked onto his little television show in Phoenix and heard enough to change his life. By 1951, Robbins was singing on local radio and hosting his own TV program in Arizona. He was still far from the Grand Ole Opry and years away from songs like “El Paso.” Then Little Jimmy Dickens appeared as a guest on the show. Dickens was already an established Columbia recording artist and Opry star. After hearing Robbins sing, he was impressed enough to tell Columbia that the young Arizona singer deserved a contract. The company listened. Robbins signed with Columbia Records that same year. In 1953, he joined the Grand Ole Opry and moved to Nashville. Over the years that followed, he became one of country music’s most versatile stars, recording everything from western ballads to country-pop and rockabilly. But the door opened in a much smaller room. Before the Grammys, the Opry and “El Paso,” Marty Robbins was simply a local television singer — until Little Jimmy Dickens heard one performance and decided Nashville needed to hear him too.

They married in 1963, while Willie was still struggling to turn his songwriting reputation into success as a singer. But in 1969, a hospital bill arrived at their home. It showed that a baby girl had been born to a woman listed as “Mrs. Connie Nelson.” Shirley had not known Willie was having an affair with Connie Koepke. She confronted him. Willie later admitted there was no explanation that could make the situation look innocent. He and Shirley divorced in 1971, and he married Connie that same year. Decades later, Willie did not try to rewrite what happened. He said he regretted the pain he had caused Shirley and his other wives, admitting that when it came to love, he had always had a gift for making things complicated. The marriage ended badly. But before it did, Shirley had already become part of Willie Nelson’s story — not only as his wife, but as one of the first voices the world heard singing beside him.
