The Doors walked into CBS’s Studio 50 to perform their No. 1 hit “Light My Fire” on The Ed Sullivan Show. Fifteen minutes before airtime, a producer came to their dressing room. One line had to go — “girl, we couldn’t get much higher.” Sponsors didn’t like it. Change it, or don’t sing it. The band agreed. During rehearsal, Morrison sang “girl, we couldn’t get much better.” Everyone relaxed. But here’s what the producers didn’t know — Morrison had already told his bandmates backstage: “We’re not changing a word.” The cameras went live.
